Google has just removed #Conversations_im from the Play Store because they think we are uploading the user’s contact list. We don’t.

🤦
Do you think this check is automatic? Or could it be stupid reviewer?
And whatsapp and signal are the only ones allowed to do that? 🤔
This is starting to look quite intentional, TBH.
To be clear: They didn’t just reject an update. They outright removed the app entirely. Otherwise my plan B would have been to remove the contacts permission which is used to display the name and profile picture locally if the XMPP address matches an entry in the users address book.

Tells a lot about the "service" those app stores provide to user safety.
That's sad !! Do you have a way to say that's not the case?
I remember a time before time Google gave itself a mantra "don't be evil"
Ok, they just removed the first word.
I didn't even know that was possible.

Sooo... they've been consequent and removed WhatsApp from the Play Store, too?

They're treating all apps the same, right?

They could have just... /looked at the code??/ It's right there!
Seeing such things nowadays my reflex thought is that some AI is hallucinating things and its results are committed without further ado.
ah man, I'm sorry you have to go through this.
What the hell? They confused roster and android contacts? Also quite rich from the thieves that stole my SIM contacts to force them in their cloud...
Давно переехал на версию с F-Droid, потому что не дают обновлять купленные программы.

#whatsapp should be removed day one with such argument.

Who told private monopoly would solve bureaucracy ? Haha.

So sad for you ! Keep up !

Sorry to hear, especially since I"m a user of the android app 😕

it's sad, but the sadest side of it is that they cut one of ways to fund your development efforts. Shame on them!

#googlesucks

#conversations removed but whatsapp not.

So it should be clear, the contacts upload is a lie.
Maybe it is political pressure against self hosted chat services.

If Google Play accepted source code for their review process, then they could be a lot more accurate. Seems crazy that they don't even offer it as an option.
Has something been added by you, connected to the way contact lists work?
Or has Google changed something so the same source code part does not pass their automated tests anymore?

They did they exact same thing to our messaging app at $work, for the exact same reason.

We know for a fact we don't upload the user's contacts anywhere (and the infra is self-hosted anyway, even if we did).

We couldn't get them to accept this fact and were only able to be reinstated by adding a note to our privacy policy about _why_ we upload them (we still don't actually upload any contacts).

Did you see this comment? Does that mean that it's possible to change the privacy policy or remove the permission? I do not know what you can do after an app is removed.

How is this possible? There are many apps that steal the contact list, and one that does NOT is removed for such case. That seems very intentional… Very sad
@mozilla well you are the power of open-source maybe you can also share so Google can listen
@matrix had a similar problem with element a while ago https://element.io/blog/element-on-google-play-store/
didn't they also flag kde connect as malware by play protect, yeah that seems sus to me
