I'm conflicted about this.
I like Telegram. It's my main messenger, it's good quality and has lots of features I really appreciate. Also pretty much everyone I want to talk with has it. I don't have to share my number with anyone and it won't be visible to everyone in a group.
When I contrast this to WhatsApp, every weird parent in my child's day care group now has my number… I don't like that at all.
On the other hand the "company" behind Telegram as a whole is extremely shady. Content moderation for public stuff? Non-existent. Also the chats aren't encrypted by default, that can be criticized these days even if it's not that relevant to me. I'm not sure how I should feel about the shady company and the moderation and encryption stuff…
I'd love Signal to have as many features as Telegram. The last time I used Signal it only worked with my number and getting my chats visible on my Mac was a huge pain. And when I accidentally deleted the app from my phone every chat was gone. Security is nice but a chat app also has to be convenient.

Encryption breaks when using multiple devices and your message history is spread between devices.

The best messenger/protocol is worthless if nobody I know uses it. And I'm too old to chose my friends by messenger.
